ASHTON on Mersey were edged out by Heaton Moor in an entertaining friendly
match on Saturday.
The hosts have won all 15 of their games in the Lancashire League this
season so things looked grim for Ashton when, after only 10 minutes
of this hard fought encounter, Heaton Moor had scored two sparkling
tries.
The home side's backline, with their armoury of reverse and scissor
passing together with superior pace, threatened a walkover.
In addition, for the first quarter the Ashton forwards were coming off
second best in the loose.
But gradually Ashton brought organisation and aggression into their
forward play and never lost a lineout.
Ashton's first serious foray into the Heaton half was a series of mauls
which brought the visitors to the Heaton 22. Thereafter a blindside
move was finished of by a try from winger Mike Waddington.
Ashton's joy was short lived as the Heaton Moor backs managed to rack
up another two tries before the break to leave the score at 26-5.
But the visitors continued to press and another perfect corner lineout
set up a maul from which flanker Kieran Tames snatched another try.
Mike Waddington bagged the next try for Ashton to finalise the score
at a more respectable 33-24.
