Ashton on Mersey 8 Sefton 0

ASHTON on Mersey started the New Year in fine fashion with a win over second-placed Sefton that moved them up to eighth in the South Lancs/Cheshire Two.

The home side kicked off with an almost fault free 25 minutes and after consistent pressure inside the Sefton 22, converted a penalty.
There were some good moves from the home side's three-quarters, including winger Mike Waddington's run to the line which was only just held back and Mike Mills' strong run from stand off which broke through the Sefton defence to give Ashton another five points.

The Ashton set pieces were faultless, with Dan Billinge catching everything in the lineout.

And Sefton's counters were routinely dealt with by Richard Bibby at full back and Mills, with some superb defensive kicks.

Both sides tired in the second half but Ashton repelled a 15-minute onslaught by Sefton inside their own 22, kept tight discipline and then effectively won the game by carrying the play deep into the Sefton right hand corner for the last 12 minutes.

Ashton have now completed the double over their Merseyside rivals.
